FACULTY AND FACULTY BOARD (RESEARCH SCHOOL OF ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS) RULES 2005
The Council of the Australian National University makes these Rules under section 9 of the Faculties and Faculty Boards (Institute of Advanced Studies) Statute.

1. Name of Rules and commencement
1 (1) These are the Faculty and Faculty Board (Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics) Rules 2005.
(2) These Rules commence on 31 December 2004, immediately after the commencement of the Rules (Repeal) Rules 2004.
2. Definitions
2 (1) In these Rules, unless the contrary intention appears:
Associate Director means a person appointed under rule 3 to assist in the administration of the School ;
Faculty means the Faculty of the Research School;
Faculty Board means the Faculty Board of the Research School;
Research School means the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics;
Statute means the Faculties and Faculty Boards (Institute of Advanced Studies) Statute.
3 Associate Director
3 (1) The Vice-Chancellor may appoint a person nominated by the Director of the Research School to assist in the administration of the Research School.
4. Membership of Faculty
4 (1) The following persons are, for sub-section 3(2) of the Statute, members of the Faculty:
(a) visiting, adjunct and honorary fellows in the Research School each of who is appointed as such a fellow for not less than 6 months;
(b) 3 students of the Research School elected in the manner that the Faculty, by resolution, determines;
(c) other persons appointed to the Faculty by resolution of the Faculty.
(2) A person who is elected or appointed to be a member of the Faculty under paragraph (1)(b) or (c) holds office for the term determined by the Faculty, by resolution.
(3) A member of the Faculty referred to in paragraph (1) (b) or (c) may, at any time, by writing to the Chair of the Faculty, resign from membership of the Faculty.
5 (1) The Chair of the Faculty must be elected by the members of the Faculty from among their number in the manner determined by the Faculty, by resolution.
(2) The Chair of the Faculty holds office for a period of 2 years commencing on 1 September next following his or her election.
(3) However, the Chair of the Faculty may, at any time, by writing to the Vice-Chancellor, resign from the office of Chair.
(4) If the office of the Chair of the Faculty becomes vacant for any reason, a person must be elected Chair by the members of the Faculty from among their number to serve for the unexpired portion of the period of office of the former Chair.
(5) The Chair of the Faculty must preside at all meetings of the Faculty.
(6) However, if:
(a) the Chair of the Faculty is present at a meeting of the Faculty and desires that another member of the Faculty preside at the meeting; or
(b) the Chair of the Faculty is absent from a meeting of the Faculty;
the members of the Faculty present at the meeting must elect another member to preside at the meeting.
6. Membership of Faculty Board
6 (1) The following persons are, for subsection 4(2) of the Statute, members of the Faculty Board:
(a) the Director of the Research School;
(b) each Associate Director of the Research School;
(c) the School’s elected members of the Board of the Institute of Advanced Studies;
(d) the Chair of the Faculty (if not otherwise a member of the Faculty Board).
(2) A member of the Faculty Board elected in accordance with paragraph (1)(c) holds office until the expiration of his or her term as a member of the Board of the Institute of Advanced Studies, or until the member earlier resigns or ceases to be a member of the Faculty.
(1) For subsection 5(2) of the Statute-
(a) the prescribed number of members of the Faculty is 4; and
(b) he prescribed number of members of the Faculty Board is 1.
(2) For subsection 5(5) of the Statute, the quorum at a meeting of the Faculty or of the Faculty Board is the number of members that is equal to one-half of the members for the time being of the Faculty or Faculty Board, as the case requires, or, if that fraction is not a whole number, the next higher whole number.
