These Regulations amend the Electoral and Referendum Regulations 1940 to prescribe the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) as a prescribed authority that may be given electoral roll information and specify the purposes for which that information may be used.

I, QUENTIN BRYCE, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, make the following Regulations under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 and the Referendum (Machinery Provisions) Act 1984.

1              Name of Regulations

                These Regulations are the Electoral and Referendum Amendment Regulations 2011 (No. 1).

2              Commencement

                These Regulations commence on the day after they are registered.

3              Amendment of Electoral and Referendum Regulations 1940

                Schedule 1 amends the Electoral and Referendum Regulations 1940.

                For paragraph 84 (2) (a) of the Act, the manner in which a Roll may indicate that a person is not enrolled as a Commonwealth elector is to put a circle (o) before the person’s name on the Roll.
