Determination (No. 1) 2001
I, RICHARD KENNETH ROBERT ALSTON, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, make the following Determination under subsection 9G(1) of the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999.

1 Name of Determination
This Determination may be cited as the Universal Service Areas Determination (No. 1) 2001.
2 Commencement
This Determination commences on 1 July 2001.
3 Definitions
In this Determination:
Act means the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999.
census collection district means an area defined as a census collection district by the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) (ABS Catalogue no. 1216.0) 1996 edition.
local government area means an area defined as a local government area by the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) (ABS Catalogue no. 1216.0) 2000 edition.
urban centre and locality means an area defined as an urban centre and locality by the Statistical Geography: Volume 3 - Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) Urban Centre/Localities (ABS Catalogue no. 2909.0) 1997 edition.

4 Universal service areas
For the purposes of section 9G of the Act, the service areas described in Schedule 1 are determined as universal service areas in respect of the obligation referred to in paragraph 9(1)(a) of the Act (dealing with the standard telephone service).
Schedule 1 – Universal service areas
Note: The following abbreviations are used in the Classification Structures in the ASGC and in this Schedule:
(A) NSW Local Government Area (excluding Cities)
(C) City
(DC) District Council
(RC) Rural City
(S) Shire.
(a) Universal service areas in the north-east New South Wales and inland south-east Queensland
For the purpose of this Schedule each of the following local government areas is a universal service area except for those parts of the local government areas that are urban centres and localities.
