FACULTY AND FACULTY BOARD (RESEARCH SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES) RULES 2005

 

 

The Council of The Australian National University makes these Rules under section 9 of the Faculties and Faculty Boards (Institute of Advanced Studies) Statute.

Citation and commencement

1(1)     These Rules are the Faculty and Faculty Board (Research School of Earth Sciences) Rules 2005.

(2)       These Rules commence on 31 December 2004, immediately after the commencement of the Rules (Repeal) Rules 2004.

 

Interpretation

2          In these Rules, unless the contrary intention appears:

Director means the Director of the Research School;

Executive Officer means the Executive Officer located in the Research School;

Faculty means the Faculty of the Research School;

Faculty Board means the Faculty Board of the Research School;

Research School means the Research School of Earth Sciences;

Statute means the Faculties and Faculty Boards (Institute of Advanced Studies) Statute.

Membership of Faculty

3 (1)    The following persons are, for the purposes of subsection 3(2) of the Statute, members of the Faculty:

              (a)   research officers, visiting fellows and honorary fellows in the Research School whose appointments are for not less than 6 months;

              (b)   the research students in the Research School who are enrolled as candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and have satisfactorily completed the appraisal exercise set by the Research School;

              (c)   such other persons as are appointed to the Faculty by resolution of the Faculty.

(2)       A person who is appointed to be a member of the Faculty under paragraph 3(c) holds office for such term as the Faculty determines but may, at any time, by instrument in writing given to the Executive Officer, resign from membership of the Faculty.

Chair of Faculty

4 (1)    There is to be a Chair of the Faculty, who is to be elected by the members of the Faculty from their number in an election conducted by the Executive Officer.

(2)       Subject to subrules (3) and (4), the Chair of the Faculty holds office for a period of 1 year commencing on the date of his or her election.

(3)       The Chair of the Faculty may, at any time, by notice in writing given to the Executive Officer, resign from the office of Chair.

(4)       If the Chair of the Faculty resigns his or her office, a Chair is to be elected by the members of the Faculty from among their number, at an election conducted by the Executive Officer, to serve for the unexpired portion of the period for which, but for this rule, the retiring Chair would have held office.

(5)       A Chair of the Faculty elected under subrule (1) or (4) is to be eligible for re-election but may not be elected for more than 2 consecutive terms of office.

(6)       The Chair of the Faculty is to preside at all meetings of the Faculty at which he or she is present.

(7)       If the Chair is absent from a meeting of the Faculty, the members of the Faculty present at the meeting must elect 1 of their number to preside at the meeting.

(8)       Subject to subrule (9), the person presiding at a meeting of the Faculty is to report to the meeting on the matters within the purview of the Faculty that were dealt with by the Faculty Board since the last meeting of the Faculty.

(9)       The person presiding at a meeting of the Faculty may invite another member of the Faculty Board to make a report in substitution for, or in addition to, the report required to be given under subrule (8).

Membership of Faculty Board

5 (1)    The following members of the Faculty are, for the purposes of sub-section 4(2) of the Statute, members of the Faculty Board:

              (a)   the Chair of the Faculty, if not otherwise a member of the Faculty Board;

              (b)   the persons who are the heads of such groups within the Research School as are, from time to time, determined by the Director, if those persons are not otherwise members of the Faculty Board;

              (c)   2 members of the academic staff of the Research School appointed by the Director after consultation with the Faculty Board.

(2)       A member of the Faculty Board referred to in paragraph (1)(c) holds office until:

              (a)   the expiration of 2 years after his or her appointment; or

              (b)   he or she resigns from that office; or

              (c)   he or she ceases to be eligible for election to the office;

whichever first occurs.

Meetings

6 (1)    For the purposes of sub-section 5(5) of the Statute:

              (a)   the quorum at a meeting of the Faculty is such number of members as is equal to one-quarter of the total number of members for the time being or, if that fraction is not a whole number, the next higher whole number; and

              (b)   the quorum at a meeting of the Faculty Board is such number of members of the Faculty Board as is equal to one-half of the total number for the time being of the Faculty Board or, if that fraction is not a whole number, the next higher whole number.

(2)       The agenda for each meeting of the Faculty is to be made available to each member of the Faculty not less than 3 clear days before the date fixed for the meeting.
