A Bill for an Act to amend the Charter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, and for related purposes

The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1  Short title

                   This Act may be cited as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Local Content) Act 2014.

2  Commencement

                   This Act commences on the day this Act receives the Royal Assent.

3  Schedule(s)

                   Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect according to its terms.

Schedule 1Amendments

  

Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983

1  After subsection 6(3)

Insert:

          (3A)  In performing its functions under subsection (1) and fulfilling its obligations under subsection (2), the Corporation must:

                     (a)  have a distinct and discernible presence in each State and Territory, across all platforms, and including but not limited to:

                              (i)  news programs, including at least one weekly current affairs program of at least 30 minutes duration; and

                             (ii)  investigative reporting; and

                            (iii)  regional reporting;

                            which are produced in, of, for and by that State or Territory; and

                     (b)  fund internal television production units (including the existing facilities in South Australia) in at least 4 States or Territories other than New South Wales and Victoria, and:

                              (i)  ensure that the units are funded to produce content beyond news and current affairs programs; and

                             (ii)  allocate at least 0.5 per cent of its annual budget to each unit for its operation.
