A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution with respect to the qualification and disqualification of members of the Parliament and Parliamentary candidates

The Parliament of Australia enacts, with the approval of the electors, as required by the Constitution:

1 Short title
        This Act may be cited as the Constitution Alteration (Right to Stand for Parliament--Qualification of Members and Candidates) 1998.

2 Disqualification
       (1) The Constitution is altered by omitting paragraph (i) of section 44 and substituting the following paragraph:

       (i) Is not an Australian citizen: or

       (2) The Constitution is altered by omitting paragraph (iv) of section 44 and substituting the following paragraph:

       (iv) Holds any judicial office or any other office that the Parliament from time to time declares to be an office for the purpose of this paragraph: or

       (3) The Constitution is altered by omitting the following words from section 44:

        , or of any of the Queen's Ministers for a State, or to the receipt of pay, half pay, or a pension, by any person as an officer or member of the Queen's navy or army,
