A Bill for an Act to amend the Social Security Act 1991 to provide for young students' eligibility for the carer payment, and for related purposes

The Parliament of Australia enacts:

1 Short title
        This Act may be cited as the Social Security Amendment (Supporting Young Carers) Act 2003.

2 Commencement
        This Act commences on the day on which it receives the Royal Assent.

3 Schedule(s)
        Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect according to its terms.

Schedule 1--Social Security Act 1991
1 Subsection 198AC(4)

Omit "If:", substitute "Subject to subsection (4A), if:".

2 After subsection 198AC(4)

Insert:

       (4A) However, paragraph (4)(c) does not apply to any temporary cessation in which the person personally providing constant care is:

       (a) undertaking either part-time or full-time study; and

       (b) under the age of 25 years.
