Invitation to comment on the commercial release of a genetically modified cotton (DIR 216)

The Gene Technology Regulator is assessing an application from Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd for commercial cultivation of a cotton genetically modified (GM) for insect resistance and herbicide tolerance in all cotton growing areas of Australia. The GM cotton and its products would enter general commerce, including use in human food and animal feed.

The Regulator has prepared a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) for this application and welcomes written submissions relating to the protection of human health and safety and the environment prior to making a decision on whether to issue the licence. The consultation RARMP and related information can be obtained via the consultation hub at https://consultations.health.gov.au/ogtr/dir-216, or from the contacts below. Submissions should reference DIR 216 and be received by 9 September 2025.
