Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999

Subregulation 12.23 (3)

NOTICE OF CONTROLLED ACTIVITY

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF PUBLIC ENTRY TO PHILLIP ISLAND

TO ALLOW CONTROL OF PURPLE SWAMP HEN

(TARLER BIRDS)(Poryphrio melanotus)

Norfolk Island National Park will be undertaking a controlled activity on Phillip Island over a three-day period between 21 to 31 May, 2019 (depending upon local weather conditions) under the provisions of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The management of Tarler Birds on Phillip Island has been identified as a priority for the protection of roosting and nesting seabirds.

This controlled activity requires the use of firearms. As this presents a public safety risk, it necessitates the temporary closure of Phillip Island.

As a result, access to Phillip Island will be restricted to authorised personnel for the duration of the controlled activity. All access points will be signposted and advice will be provided to the Norfolk Island media both prior to and on the actual dates of the closures.

Any queries about this activity can be referred to the Norfolk Island National Park, Park Manager, Mr Nigel Greenup.
