The Parliament of Australia enacts:
This Act may be cited as the Anglo‑Australian Telescope Agreement Amendment Act 2006.
(1) Each provision of this Act specified in column 1 of the table commences, or is taken to have commenced, on the day or at the time specified in column 2 of the table.

Schedule 1 | The later of: (a) the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent; and (b) the day on which the Supplementary Agreement between the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the Anglo‑Australian Optical Telescope, at Siding Spring, New South Wales, Australia, done at Canberra on 3 November 2005, comes into force for Australia. However, the provision(s) do not commence at all if the event mentioned in paragraph (b) does not occur before the end of the period of 6 months beginning on the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent. The Minister must announce by notice in the Gazette the day on which the Supplementary Agreement comes into force for Australia. | 27 June 2006 (paragraph (b) applies) |

Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect according to its terms.
Schedule 1—Amendment of the Anglo‑Australian Telescope Agreement Act 1970
1 Section 4
Insert:
Agreement means:
(a) the Principal Agreement; and
(b) the Supplementary Agreement between the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the Anglo‑Australian Optical Telescope, at Siding Spring, New South Wales, Australia, done at Canberra on 3 November 2005.
Note 1: The Agreement will terminate with effect from 1 July 2010: see the Supplementary Agreement.
Note 2: In 2006, the text of the Supplementary Agreement was accessible through the Australian Treaties Library on the AustLII Internet site (www.austlii.edu.au).

Insert:
Principal Agreement means:
(a) the Agreement between the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to provide for the Establishment and Operation of a Large Optical Telescope, done at Canberra on 25 September 1969; or
(b) if that Agreement is amended—that Agreement as so amended.
