REGULATION UNDER THE CUSTOMS ACT 19011930 AND THE COMMERCE (TRADE DESCRIPTIONS) ACT 19051933.

I, the GovernorGeneral in and over the Commonwealth of Australia, acting with the advice of the Federal Executive Council, hereby make the following Regulation under the Customs Act 19011930 and the Commerce (Trade Descriptions) Act 19051933.

Amendment of Commerce (General Exports) Regulations.

(Statutory Rules 1926 No. 22, as amended to this date.)

The Commerce (General Exports) Regulations are amended by inserting after Regulation 13 the following regulation:—

Applesconditions of preparation and canning.

13a. The canning for export of apples shall be subject to the following conditions:—

(a) Only one variety of apple shall be placed in each can or case.

(b) The apples shall be prepared in accordance with such one of the following sets of conditions as is applicable to the description of the apples:—

(i) Apples describable as “Choice Quality”—

Only sound ripe apples not less than 2 inches in diameter which have been properly peeled shall be canned. When prepared, the pieces shall be free from worm holes, scabs and like blemishes, and shall be evenly cut. Not less than 90 per centum of the pieces shall remain whole, and shall be free from skin or core and even in size and shape. The colour of not less than 95 per centum of the pieces shall be true to the natural colour of the variety of the apples used. The liquor in which the apples are canned shall be clear. The name of the variety of apples used shall be stated in the label in letters not less than threeeighths of an inch in height.

(ii) Apples describable, as “Standard Quality”—

Only sound rips apples or portions thereof which have been properly peeled, cored and trimmed shall be canned. When prepared, the pieces shall be free from worm holes, scabs and like blemishes and shall be fairly evenly cut. Not less than 70 per centum of the pieces shall remain whole, and shall be free from skin or core, and not less than 80 per centum of the pieces shall be even in size and shape. The colour of not less than 90 per centum of the piece shall be fairly true to the natural colour of the variety of apples used,. The liquor in which the apples are canned shall be fairly clear”.
